The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is preparing to automate final provident fund withdrawal claims and account transfers for its more than seven crore members, according to Central Provident Fund Commissioner Ramesh Krishnamurthi.

EPFO Expands Auto-Settlement to Final Withdrawal Claims

The retirement fund body is moving to expand its automated processing system beyond partial payouts.

Currently, EPFO processes partial or advance withdrawal claims of up to ₹5 lakh through an automated mode. That system typically settles eligible claims within three days when required documentation and KYC records are accurate.

Automated Account Migration for Job Changes

Alongside withdrawal updates, the EPFO plans to automate provident fund account transfers when members switch employers. Under the proposed framework, workers will no longer need to file separate physical or digital forms to migrate their balances. Instead, the system will automatically transfer accumulated funds to the member’s latest active account, according to statements made by Krishnamurthi at the seminar.

This change targets administrative bottlenecks for employees who accumulate balances across multiple employers over their careers.

KYC Requirements and Next Steps

While the digital transition promises faster processing times, officials emphasize that automated approvals still rely on correct subscriber data. Union Labour Secretary Vandana Gurnani noted at the seminar that states will frame individual rules under the concurrent labour list, balancing compliance reduction with worker protections.

For EPFO subscribers, successfully utilizing the upcoming auto-settlement features requires fully updated records. Members must ensure their Aadhaar, Permanent Account Number (PAN), and active bank account details are accurately linked with their EPF profiles to prevent automated processing delays.
