Sioux Falls Man Sentenced to 13 Years in Federal Prison for Drug and Gun Crimes

Lorenzo Rene Portillo, a 37-year-old Sioux Falls resident, was sentenced on August 24, 2026, to 13 years and 5 months in federal prison for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and unlawful possession of a firearm. Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange of the U.S. District Court handed down the sentence, which includes five years of supervised release and a $200 special assessment directed to the Federal Crime Victims Fund, according to announcements from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Dakota.

Federal Indictment and Guilty Plea Details

A federal grand jury indicted Portillo in July 2025. Court records show that Portillo entered a guilty plea on May 5, 2026. Investigators established that between September 2024 and February 2025, Portillo participated in a conspiracy that distributed more than 500 grams of methamphetamine in the Sioux Falls area. Prosecutors stated that he acquired methamphetamine from co-conspirators before supplying it to secondary sellers.

Arrest and Firearm Violations

Law enforcement arrested Portillo on February 10, 2025, during a search of a Sioux Falls residence where he was staying temporarily. Officers recovered a handgun at the scene. Because Portillo has multiple prior felony convictions, federal law strictly prohibits him from possessing firearms. Consequently, the indictment included a count for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, which added to the severity of the federal sentence.

Law Enforcement Investigation and Broader Initiatives

U.S. Attorney Ron Parsons emphasized the collaborative nature of the multi-agency investigation. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Sioux Falls Police Department jointly investigated the case, which Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Joyce prosecuted.

The prosecution falls under Operation Take Back America, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative designed to target transnational criminal organizations, cartels, and violent crime. The framework combines resources from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhoods to address firearms offenses and illegal drug trafficking across South Dakota communities. Following the sentencing on August 24, 2026, U.S. Marshals immediately took Portillo into custody to begin serving his prison term.
