Tesla expanded its robotaxi service area in Austin, Texas, growing the operational footprint by 9 percent to a total of 288 square miles, according to reports from Teslarati. The expansion, marking the first spatial growth for the autonomous fleet in ten months, extends northward to Pflugerville along US 183 to enable unassisted driverless trips.

Austin Fleet Growth and Pre-Launch Context

Alongside the geographic expansion, Tesla increased its autonomous vehicle fleet in Texas by adding 45 Cybercab units, bringing the state’s total autonomous fleet to 314 vehicles, according to Teslarati. Out of that total, 269 units are Model Y crossovers. The deployment precedes a scheduled launch event in Austin, representing the company’s first documented autonomous drives since June 22, 2025.

Global Autonomous Developments in Asia

Concurrent with the Austin expansion, international competitors advanced their autonomous vehicle testing. DiDi Autonomous Driving launched passenger test rides for its level-4 autonomous R2 robotaxi model in Beijing and Guangzhou, according to PR Newswire and Unite.ai. Developed alongside GAC Aion, the R2 features 33 sensors and over 2,000 TOPS of computing power, with production costs dropping 74 percent compared to the prior model. A continuous pilot operation has been running in Huangpu since December 2025.

In South Korea, Pony.ai and FutureLink announced a partnership to introduce 200 level-4 robotaxis to Seoul by 2028, beginning with an initial certification batch of ten vehicles before scaling up 190 additional units. The vehicles utilize BAIC’s seventh-generation platform, achieving a 70 percent reduction in production costs, with regular commercial service planned for the Gangnam district by June 2027.

Autonomous Delivery and Urban Pilot Expansion

Autonomous logistics fleets also scaled operations, with Avride reporting a deployment of over 1,000 autonomous vehicles and delivery robots across U.S. cities and more than 25 university campuses. In Austin, Avride operates a research fleet of 150 to 200 vehicles, while maintaining over 60 autonomous vehicles servicing Uber in Dallas, with plans to expand into three additional markets by 2028.

In Hoboken, New Jersey, a robot-assisted delivery pilot project launched through a collaboration between Avride and Coco Robotics. Simultaneously, Rakuten doubled its autonomous delivery fleet in Tokyo to ten robots. Utilizing Avride units equipped with 54-liter cargo holds, the service operates in the Harumi, Tsukishima, and Kachidoki neighborhoods to supply households.

Regulatory Frameworks and Market Integration

Regulatory bodies responded to the influx of autonomous technology with updated oversight. Russia enacted new traffic regulations for delivery robots across 35 regions, establishing a mandatory speed limit—specifically capped at 6 km/h when crossing streets—during a three-year testing phase. In the United States, Waymo prepared for a launch in Denver, marking its entry into a market characterized by winter weather conditions, according to the Denver Gazette. Waymo currently operates commercial services in 11 cities.

Despite data showing lower accident rates for autonomous systems compared to human drivers, the technology continues to draw scrutiny.
