Scottie Scheffler secured his second Tour Championship and FedExCup title on Sunday at East Lake Golf Club, overcoming a three-stroke deficit to defeat Viktor Hovland by three strokes, according to NBC Sports. Scheffler carded a 4-under 66 in the final round to finish at 16 under par overall.
How Scheffler Overcame the Deficit at East Lake
Starting the day three strokes behind Hovland, Scheffler quickly closed the gap by birding two of the first four holes, which included a near-ace on the par-3 second hole, according to NBC Sports. Although he recorded a bogey on the par-4 seventh, Scheffler immediately bounced back with a birdie on the par-4 eighth to reach 2 under at the turn. He added two more strokes on the back nine to seal the victory. “I think days like today are really fun,” Scheffler told NBC Sports after his round. “Coming from behind and being able to win tournaments is a really cool feeling.”
Historical Context and Career Earnings
With this victory, Scheffler joins Tiger Woods (2007, 2009) and Rory McIlroy (2016, 2019, 2022) as the only players in PGA Tour history to win multiple FedExCup titles, according to NBC Sports. The win also earned Scheffler a $10 million prize, pushing his career earnings past $130 million and allowing him to pass Tiger Woods on the Tour’s career money list. This marks Scheffler’s 22nd career PGA Tour victory and his third win of the 2026 season, following previous titles at the American Express and the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
Final Standings and Presidents Cup Implications
Viktor Hovland and Ryan Gerard, who played together in the final pairing, both shot 2 over par on Sunday to finish in second and third place respectively, according to NBC Sports. Out of the 30-man field at East Lake, only Robert MacIntyre (even par) and Gary Woodland (2 over par) finished the week at or over par alongside Hovland and Gerard. Following the conclusion of the tournament, Gerard planned to catch a red-eye flight to Switzerland to compete in the Omega European Masters on the DP World Tour. “Full transparency, if I get a Presidents Cup spot, I’d love to kind of roll into there being a little bit more prepared,” Gerard told NBC Sports regarding his upcoming schedule ahead of the September 22-27 event at Medinah Country Club in Illinois.
