Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is closely monitoring nationwide efforts to contain forest and land fires as seasonal containment operations intensify, according to Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni. Speaking in Jakarta on Tuesday, Antoni credited the president’s direct field involvement and strict oversight for driving a recent downward trend in wildfire hotspots across several vulnerable provinces.
Cabinet Action and Regional Deployments
The central government’s response relies on a structured division of field responsibilities across high-risk provinces. Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya stated that President Prabowo flew directly to Kalimantan on August 22, 2026, to inspect affected areas and personally lead simultaneous containment operations. Prior to the deployment, Prabowo instructed senior military and police officials to coordinate directly with regional governments and local communities.
According to official deployment orders, oversight of West Kalimantan falls to TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto and Polri Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo. Central Kalimantan containment is managed by Army Chief of Staff General Maruli Simanjuntak and Polri Deputy Chief Commissioner General Dedi Prasetyo. In South Kalimantan, Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali works alongside Polri Chief of Operations Commissioner General Muhammad Fadil Imran, while TNI Deputy Commander General Tandyo Budi Revita and Polri Mobile Brigade Corps Commander Commissioner General Ramdani Hidayat support operations in East Kalimantan.
Hotspot Trends and Weather Modification
Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni reported measurable improvements in air and land metrics through August, noting that Riau recorded zero hotspots for two consecutive days on August 30 and 31. Central Kalimantan and West Kalimantan also exhibited declining hotspot counts in late August assessments.
Despite these improvements, officials warn that September marks the anticipated peak of El Nino conditions, elevating operational urgency. To counter potential flare-ups, the Forestry Ministry is intensifying Weather Modification Operations across six provinces: Riau, South Sumatra, Jambi, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, and South Kalimantan. These operations target available rain clouds to seed precipitation, dampen dry peatlands, and maintain high groundwater tables.
Ground Operations and Public Compliance
Minister Antoni thanked the Indonesian public for cooperating by refraining from using open fire for land clearing, which contributed to the recent reduction in uncontrolled blazes.
Concurrently, the government maintains a strict enforcement stance. Cabinet Secretary Wijaya reiterated that President Prabowo ordered strict legal accountability for any individuals or corporate entities found violating environmental protection laws and regulations against illegal land burning.
Transportation and Air Quality Impacts
Wildfire smoke has severely affected regional air quality, with BNPB reporting that air pollution levels in parts of Kalimantan reached hazardous thresholds. The degraded visibility prompted flight cancellations at Tjilik Riwut Airport in Palangka Raya, disrupting local travel schedules as ground crews and aviation authorities monitor conditions hour by hour.
