Steve Markowitz, a longtime Harrisburg, Pennsylvania resident and pharmacist who spent 35 years as a District and Pharmacy Manager for Walmart, died on August 31, 2026, according to an obituary published by the Patriot-News.

Early Life and 37-Year Pharmacy Career

Born on December 9, 1966, Markowitz originally grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he graduated from George Washington High School. He later attended the University of Pittsburgh, earning a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1989.

According to the Patriot-News obituary, Markowitz dedicated 37 years to the pharmacy profession. He began his career working at Rite Aid for two years before transitioning to Walmart, where he spent the remaining 35 years serving as a District and Pharmacy Manager. Throughout his career in retail pharmacy, Markowitz helped well over 2 million patients and customers.

Community Leadership and Personal Pursuits

Outside of his professional career, Markowitz was involved in community and religious organizations in the Harrisburg area. According to the Patriot-News, he served on the board of the Harrisburg Jewish Federation, held a past position as Treasurer of Kesher Israel Congregation, and was a member of Beth El Temple.

Markowitz pursued a wide array of outdoor adventures and hobbies. He was an avid scuba diver who frequently dove with sharks and volunteered his time on search and recovery dives to assist police investigations. In addition to his underwater pursuits, he was a member of the RC airplane community, spending weekends attending fly-ins with fellow pilots. He also enjoyed poker games and participated in a multi-generational fantasy football league.

Surviving Family and Funeral Services

Markowitz passed away unexpectedly following a recent diagnosis of aggressive cancer, just weeks prior to his death, as reported by the Patriot-News.

He is survived by Dena, his wife of 37 years, and their two children, Lacey and Spencer, along with Spencer’s wife, Sarah. He is also survived by his mother, Marlene Markowitz (Randi), and his brother, Howard Markowitz (Susan). He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Markowitz.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at the Beth El Cemetery Chapel, located at 1100 South Progress Avenue in Harrisburg, with burial to follow in the Beth El Temple Cemetery. The arrangements are under the direction of the Hetrick-Bitner Funeral Home, located at 3125 Walnut Street in Harrisburg, according to published notices.

The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to The Humane Society of Harrisburg Area, located at 7790 Grayson Road, Harrisburg, PA 17111.
