Hanwa Aerospace introduced a future artillery operating concept linking its K9 self-propelled howitzer with vertical takeoff and landing fire-guidance drones during the fifth annual K9 User Club meeting in Tartu, Estonia, according to company statements released on September 3, 2026. The new capability aims to shorten the time required to detect targets and deliver precise strikes.

The two-day conference, which opened on September 2, brought together delegations from seven K9-operating nations—including South Korea, Poland, Norway, Finland, Romania, and Australia—alongside observer nations such as Spain and Sweden, according to Hanwa Aerospace. More than 200 military and industry representatives attended the event, marking the largest gathering in the club’s history to focus on evolving battlefield requirements and artillery system development.

Drone Integration and Sensor-to-Shooter Timelines

According to Hanwa Aerospace, the newly proposed fire-guidance drone operates in the air to detect and track targets while generating precise coordinates to support K9 artillery fire. Following a strike, the drone observes the impact point and conducts damage assessments, effectively linking target acquisition, execution, and evaluation into a single streamlined sequence.

Company officials stated that this integration reduces the “sensor-to-shooter” timeline—the interval between spotting a target and actually firing upon it. The setup is designed to improve responsiveness against moving and emergency targets on modern battlefields, moving beyond the traditional operational boundaries of standalone artillery batteries.

International Collaboration and Wheeled Artillery Systems

Beyond drone integration, participating delegations examined broader shifts in artillery maintenance and operational concepts. Attendees showed strong interest in wheeled artillery variants incorporating K9 core technologies, according to conference reports.

Particular attention centered on the K9MH (Mobile Howitzer), a system selected as a prototype for the United States Army’s Mobile Tactical Cannon (MTC) program. The K9MH combines an automated turret with a wheeled chassis and demonstrated a high-speed firing capability of nine rounds within one minute during United States Army performance verification tests, according to company disclosures.
