According to an interview with MK Sports following an 8-5 road victory against the Boston Hunters at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois, Williams accepted the post after receiving a call from the league several months after the conclusion of his major league coaching tenure.
Coaching Career and Path to the WPBL
Williams brings extensive professional baseball experience to the WPBL, having managed the Washington Nationals in 2014 and earned National League Manager of the Year honors in his debut season before his departure after the 2015 campaign. He also managed the KBO League team KIA Tigers between 2020 and 2021.
After officially retiring from Major League Baseball coaching following the previous season, Williams was approached by WPBL organizers. Having three daughters heavily influenced his decision to take the job, according to his interview with MK Sports. Williams noted that participating in the historic first step of the women’s professional league felt natural and meaningful.
First Impressions and Regular Season Success
Entering the league with limited prior knowledge of women’s professional baseball, Williams expressed surprise at the high level of talent and intensity displayed by his players from day one. According to the San Francisco manager, his primary responsibility is to help elevate every player’s skill set while managing the roster without unnecessary interference, allowing the athletes to execute their roles effectively.
Under his leadership, the Firebells secured first place in the regular-season standings, setting up a postseason run. Williams credited the players’ work ethic and self-discipline for the team’s success, stating that he feels immense pride in the professional approach the roster brings to the field each day as they prepare for the final playoff series.
