Bridging the Conservation Technology Gap in African Reserves

Modern wildlife management increasingly relies on sophisticated hardware, yet reserves frequently encounter technical hurdles when equipment malfunctions or requires ongoing maintenance. Carien Soldatos, who oversees the protected area technician training program for the CCF, noted that advanced digital tools provide limited utility without personnel trained to repair and maintain them locally.

To address this operational deficiency, the CCF launched a 10-module online training curriculum for protected area technicians. Following completion of the digital coursework, organizers selected top-performing participants to attend an intensive practical training component held at the Lapalala Wilderness nature reserve in South Africa’s Limpopo province.

Hands-On Training at Lapalala Wilderness

During the practical sessions at Lapalala, participants from 11 African nations—including Kenya, Zimbabwe, Benin, Liberia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Madagascar—received direct instruction in thermal drone deployment, power systems, connectivity, and communication sensors. Jacques Viljoen, an instructor at the reserve, demonstrated how night-vision drone technology can locate wildlife efficiently across vast, unlit landscapes.

Duncan Kanyakera, representing the Taita Taveta Wildlife Conservancies Association in Kenya’s Tsavo landscape, observed a thermal drone locate a resting cheetah and her cubs within minutes during a night demonstration. Kanyakera noted that deploying similar aerial technology in Tsavo could significantly improve responses to human-wildlife conflicts, such as tracking elephants entering agricultural zones.

Regional Impact and Future Expansion

Participants plan to apply their training across multiple regional parks and educational institutions. Effort Zivengwa of the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority stated that the curriculum provided new insights into integrating existing sensor networks and establishing point-to-point internet access at remote park stations. Meanwhile, Mabel Nokhuthula Piki, an educator at the Chinhoyi University of Technology in Zimbabwe, indicated plans to incorporate the technical insights into wildlife monitoring curricula for students.

The CCF announced plans to conduct a subsequent practical training cohort for protected area technicians in early 2027, alongside hardware donations and internship placements to support participants from the inaugural program.
