Since taking charge in 2019, O’Gara has guided La Rochelle to back-to-back Champions Cup titles in 2022 and 2023, defeating Leinster on both occasions. Despite those European triumphs, the club has experienced heartbreak in the domestic Top 14, falling in two finals to Toulouse in 2021 and 2023.

O’Gara addressed his single-minded focus on securing the domestic shield in his column for the Irish Examiner, noting that La Rochelle remains his primary professional focus. “La Rochelle and the Bouclier remain an absolute obsession, greater at this moment than any other coaching project I could nominate or conceive of,” O’Gara wrote in the column. He added that while his previous deal was nearing its end, “La Rochelle is the only project in my eyeline.”
