AAA data lists Seattle as the top domestic travel destination in the United States for the holiday weekend, outpacing Orlando, Boston, Denver, and New York.

I-5 and Major Corridor Congestion Windows

According to WSDOT travel projections, the heaviest traffic on the southbound I-5 corridor between Tacoma and Lacey is expected on Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., with additional congestion on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Return travelers heading north will encounter peak volumes on Monday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., followed by Tuesday morning commuters starting at 5 a.m.

Westbound return traffic toward Seattle will peak on Monday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., while Tuesday traffic is expected to remain relatively normal, according to state transportation data.

On US-2 between Skykomish and Stevens Pass, eastbound peaks occur Friday from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Return westbound traffic concentrates on Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Routes toward the Canadian border on I-5 between Bellingham and the international boundary show northbound peaks on Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Southbound return traffic is forecasted to be heaviest on Monday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Highway Construction and Safety Precautions

WSDOT announced that while most statewide highway construction will be suspended over the holiday weekend, the “Revive I-5” project work zone on the Ship Canal Bridge in Seattle will remain active. State transportation officials advise drivers to check real-time traffic conditions before departing and to travel during off-peak hours when possible.

With wildfire risks remaining elevated across Washington state, safety officials urge motorists to avoid discarding cigarette butts or flammable materials from vehicles. Drivers should also prevent tow chains from dragging on pavement and refrain from parking vehicles on dry grass to minimize spark hazards.
