Korea Weather: Large Temperature Swings and Strong Winds in Jeju/South Coast

South Korea’s southern coast and Jeju Island are facing severe disruptions from high winds and hazardous marine conditions, according to weather reports tracked by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and broadcast by YTN. Gale warnings remain active across Jeju, while strong wind advisories affect parts of the southern mainland, creating dangerous conditions for local navigation and maritime operations.

Severe Weather and Marine Warnings Across Jeju and the South Coast

High winds reaching speeds of 90 to 100 kilometers per hour (approximately 55 to 62 miles per hour) have been recorded in mountain areas of Jeju and at Maemuldo Island in Tongyeong, according to meteorological data cited by YTN. The extreme gusts have triggered gale warnings for all of Jeju Island and wind advisories along the southern mainland coast.

At sea, high waves reaching up to 5 meters (16 feet) have prompted stringent gale and high-wave warnings across southern waters. The hazardous conditions have significantly complicated ongoing maritime operations, including tugboat search efforts in the southern region. Authorities have issued urgent warnings advising all vessels at sea and in ports to exercise extreme caution to prevent further maritime accidents.

Precipitation Patterns and Mild Inland Conditions

While the southern coast and Jeju contend with wind and rain, inland regions are experiencing generally clear, pleasant early autumn weather characterized by wide daily temperature ranges. According to YTN field reports from Hongdae in Seoul, afternoon temperatures climbed to nearly 30 degrees Celsius (85.6 degrees Fahrenheit), showing a nearly 10-degree jump from morning lows.

Precipitation is largely confined to eastern Gangwon province, Jeju, and parts of the northern East Coast of Gyeongsang, where intermittent rain showers are expected to drop between 5 and 20 millimeters through Monday. Inland areas will remain mostly clear and dry, though meteorologists advise citizens to wear light outerwear to manage the stark temperature fluctuations typical of the season.
