The Guatemalan government announced on September 3, 2026, that it has allocated more than 1.06亿格查尔 through the Secretariat of Planning and Programming of the Presidency (Segeplan) to fund over 千余个 scholarship slots. According to Segeplan Secretary General Carlos Mendoza, the initiative targets regional equity by prioritizing students from rural departments including Alta Verapaz, Izabal, Petén, and Quiché.

The funding rollout forms the centerpiece of Guatemala’s 25th Scholarship Fair, held under the theme “Turning dreams into the future.” The three-day event brings together more than 30 partner organizations, including embassies, international organizations, and universities, to connect students with educational financing spanning undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral tracks.

Scholarship Distribution and Academic Tracks

According to Segeplan data, the approved 1,019 scholarship slots carry an average value of roughly 10万格查尔 each, though exact totals vary by degree program, host university, and duration. Undergraduate studies account for the vast majority of the awards with 912 slots. Postgraduate programs secure 54 spots for master’s and doctoral candidates, while non-university technical courses claim the remaining 53 awards.

Domestic institutions absorb roughly 约90% of the selected candidates. The remaining head abroad for specialized training, including a contingent of 30 students currently enrolled at the Pan-American Agricultural School, Zamorano, in Honduras to study agricultural and livestock sciences.

Budget Projections and Future Funding

Mendoza noted that existing budget parameters could stretch to cover additional beneficiaries. Based on the 10万格查尔 average per student, current resources could sustain at least 1,500 more scholarship slots.
