London Police Deploy Sur-Ron E-Bikes to Combat Phone Thieves

London’s Metropolitan Police have expanded their fleet of high-powered Sur-Ron electric bikes from five to 25 machines, deploying the lightweight two-wheelers to chase phone thieves and robbers who use agile e-bikes to flee through narrow alleys, pedestrian zones, and staircases where traditional police cruisers cannot follow, according to the Metropolitan Police.

How London Police Use Sur-Ron E-Bikes Against Urban Crime

The Metropolitan Police stated that fast electric motorcycles have increasingly become attractive to criminals because their light weight and rapid acceleration allow suspects to slip between cars, hop onto sidewalks, and disappear into tight spaces. Traditional police vehicles lack the mobility to navigate these narrow passages, leaving law enforcement at a distinct disadvantage in congested areas.

To counter this tactic, the force increased its Sur-Ron fleet to 25 units. According to the Metropolitan Police, these electric bikes allow officers to match the acceleration and maneuverability of fleeing suspects. On August 17, officers successfully pursued an uninsured e-bike rider whose vehicle attempted to escape; the police Sur-Ron matched the suspect’s speed until the rider crashed and was detained. Four days later, another officer used a Sur-Ron to chase a fleeing moped through heavy traffic and into a housing estate, resulting in an arrest and the recovery of illegal substances, as reported by the Metropolitan Police.

Broader Crackdown on Illegal Electric Two-Wheelers

The deployment of police Sur-Rons coincides with a broader municipal effort to regulate and remove illegal electric micromobility devices from London streets. According to the Metropolitan Police, authorities seized more than 2,500 illegal e-bikes and e-scooters during the first seven months of 2026 alone, surpassing the total number of seizures recorded across all of 2025 for machines that were modified for excessive speeds or operated without required insurance and registration.

While the specialized e-bike units target immediate street chases, the Metropolitan Police attribute an overall reduction in crime to a combination of tactics. Official figures show that phone theft dropped by more than 13,000 offenses across London over the past year, while broader neighborhood crime declined by 14% in the 12 months leading up to July, according to the force. Alongside the expanded Sur-Ron deployment, the Met utilizes drones and targeted policing operations to dismantle organized theft networks.

Funding the Police Fleet Through Confiscated Assets

The expansion of the Metropolitan Police Sur-Ron fleet was funded in part using profits confiscated from criminals, according to the force.
