Bangladesh is confronting its deadliest measles outbreak in decades, with child fatalities nearing the grim milestone of 1,000 deaths amid surging hospital admissions, according to health ministry figures reported by Agence France-Presse. At least 986 children have died since March, while suspected and confirmed cases across the nation of 170 million have surpassed 180,000.

Hospital Wards Fill as Daily Suspected Cases Top 1,000

Crowded hospital wards in Dhaka are filling with struggling babies as the country records more than 1,000 suspected measles cases daily, according to health ministry data cited by Agence France-Presse. At Dhaka’s Shishu Hospital, patients line the specialized measles wards where oxygen machines operate continuously. Rima Akter, a 30-year-old mother interviewed by Agence France-Presse on Sept. 3, kept vigil beside her nine-month-old son, Sabit Haque, noting she witnessed two children die at the facility on the same day. Sanjana Islam Modina, 19, told Agence France-Presse that her six-month-old son, Ayan, contracted measles after initially being admitted for pneumonia in July, subsequently spending 15 days in intensive care before moving to the measles ward with an oxygen tube fixed to his nose.

Immunization Gaps Fuel the Epidemic

The current outbreak has exposed significant gaps in childhood immunization coverage across Bangladesh. SM Ziauddin Hyder, special assistant to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for health, described the outbreak as devastating to Agence France-Presse. While Bangladesh previously made major advances in vaccination against infectious diseases, a measles immunisation drive planned for 2024 was delayed by the political uprising that toppled former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Subsequent workers’ strikes and political instability further delayed a planned 2025 campaign, leaving a significant cohort of children missing their routine doses, according to Hyder, who noted that healthcare workers are now working to close the immunity gap.

Clinical Complications and Vulnerable Populations

Measles is highly contagious, spreading through coughs and sneezes, and features no specific treatment once contracted, according to medical reports. Complications frequently include severe breathing problems and brain swelling. Most cases recorded during the current outbreak affect children between six months and five years of age. Doctors note that many young patients arrive at hospitals already critically ill, with malnutrition compounding their vulnerability. Epidemiologist Mahmudur Rahman, former director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research, told Agence France-Presse that Bangladesh should consider a broader vaccination campaign alongside heightened public awareness measures, including isolating infected children, handwashing, and the use of masks by caregivers.
