One person died Saturday afternoon in a residential apartment fire on Bilker Allee in the Unterbilk neighborhood of Düsseldorf, according to reports from the Düsseldorf Fire Department and local outlet Ddorf-aktuell.
Third-Floor Blaze Shakes Unterbilk
First responders encountered heavy smoke pouring from the windows of a third-floor apartment when they arrived at the scene, according to official fire department accounts.
While crews successfully prevented the fire from spreading to neighboring apartments within the residential building, they discovered a deceased person inside the burning third-floor unit. Authorities stated that it remained unclear late Saturday whether the victim was the tenant of the apartment or another individual.
Dozens of Responders Treat Smoke Inhalation
The emergency medical services of the state capital Düsseldorf treated ten individuals at the scene for smoke inhalation and related symptoms, as reported by Ddorf-aktuell. Paramedics transported three of those patients to area hospitals for further observation and medical care.
Festival Proximity and Transit Disruptions
The incident unfolded in close proximity to a neighborhood children’s festival held for the local “Büdchentag” event.

Approximately 40 firefighters and rescue personnel participated in the operations, which kept the Bilker Allee completely closed to traffic for roughly two and a half hours, causing local transit disruptions.
Criminal Investigation and Structural Damage
Following the conclusion of firefighting efforts, the Düsseldorf Fire Department transferred control of the location to the police. The criminal investigation division of the Düsseldorf Police Department took over the case to determine the exact cause of the fire and verify the identity of the deceased victim.
Due to intense heat, flames, smoke, and soot damage, the third-floor fire apartment is currently uninhabitable. According to municipal authorities, the heavy smoke migration also rendered several other apartments in the building temporarily unsafe for occupancy.
