Fenerbahce midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has been handed a four-game UEFA suspension following disciplinary proceedings stemming from a fiery Champions League playoff clash against Olympique Lyon in August, according to announcements from European football’s governing body. The suspension includes two matches served immediately, while the remaining two games are suspended for a probationary period of one year. In addition to the ban, Guendouzi was ordered to pay a 50,000-euro fine.

According to UEFA disciplinary statements, the sanctions follow a volatile playoff return leg in Lyon. Investigators found that Guendouzi—who previously played for Lyon’s fierce local rivals Olympique Marseille between 2021 and 2023—insulted individuals during the match, provoked spectators, and breached fundamental rules of conduct.
The situation escalated significantly at the final whistle. Teammate Mason Greenwood also faced disciplinary action for his role in the post-match chaos. Greenwood received a one-match ban that was suspended for a probationary period, alongside a 30,000-euro fine for violating fundamental rules of conduct.
Club Fines and Financial Penalties Issued
Beyond the player suspensions, European football’s governing body imposed substantial financial penalties on the participating clubs. Olympique Lyon was fined 108,500 euros for security and behavioral lapses during the fixture, while Fenerbahce received a 95,000-euro fine.
The disciplinary fallout comes as both clubs navigate contrasting fortunes on the continental stage. Fenerbahce secured their progression to the Champions League group phase following a 1-1 draw in the first leg and a 2-1 victory in the return fixture in Lyon, marking the Turkish club’s return to Europe’s premier club competition after a 15-year absence.
