Uber has officially launched a trial of autonomous robotaxis in London using artificial intelligence technology developed by British startup Wayve, according to CBS News. The rollout deploys 15 autonomous Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles equipped with safety supervisors on board, as current local regulations prohibit fully driverless operation on public roads.
### The Wayve AI Approach in London’s Dense Streets
Wayve chief executive officer Alex Kendall explained in interviews with CBS News and “60 Minutes” that the company’s autonomous system differs fundamentally from competitors like Alphabet subsidiary Waymo. While Waymo maps cities extensively before operating, Wayve trains its artificial intelligence on millions of hours of driving data from around the world.
According to Kendall, this training allows the system to interpret unfamiliar environments and make real-time decisions without prior mapping. That capability faces a severe test in London, where Wayve and Uber confront hundreds-of-years-old road layouts, frequent roundabouts, and significantly higher concentrations of cyclists, pedestrians, and roadwork compared to cities like San Francisco.
### Phased Rollout and Passenger Availability
Uber is managing the London deployment through a phased rollout rather than a sudden citywide launch, according to The Verge. The company has opened an interest list within the Uber app settings under ride preferences, allowing customers to sign up for a chance to match with a Wayve vehicle.
Uber stated that joining the interest list increases a rider’s match probability when the service goes live in the coming months. Victor Charoonsophonsak of Wayve told The Verge that the initial fleet will start with a mid-to-high single-digit number of cars.
Riders matched with a Wayve autonomous vehicle will receive an in-app notification with the option to switch to a traditional human-driven ride. Uber confirmed that customers requesting standard tiers such as UberX, Uber Electric, or Uber Comfort will pay the same rate with no additional fee for taking the autonomous vehicle.
### Regulatory Hurdles and Industry Landscape
Full autonomy remains restricted on UK public roads. Current rules mandate that a safety driver must sit behind the wheel to intervene when necessary. During a test drive conducted by a CBS News crew that cost 20% more than a standard fare, the autonomous vehicle operated independently at first but encountered difficulty in a narrow passageway, requiring the safety supervisor to take manual control.
The broader regulatory framework is shifting. The UK government permitted fully driverless ride-hail pilots to begin in spring 2026, with broader commercial rollouts scheduled for late 2027 when the Automated Vehicles Act of 2024 takes full effect, as reported by The Verge.
Meanwhile, Wayve’s financial backing includes major technology players such as Nvidia and Microsoft alongside Uber. As autonomous testing expands, the traditional black cab sector continues to monitor the shift. Transport for London statistics cited by CBS News show that the number of licensed black cab drivers has dropped from approximately 25,000 in 2010 down to roughly 16,000. Sarfraz Maredia, Uber’s global head of autonomous mobility and delivery, stated to CBS News that the company does not view robotaxis as a near-term risk to black cab drivers, arguing that market growth will allow autonomous vehicles to absorb rising demand.
