Indonesia’s health ministry urged residents in affected areas to stay indoors and wear face masks to mitigate respiratory, eye, and skin risks caused by the falling ash. According to the Indonesian newspaper Kompas, several schools suspended classes on Saturday after students and local residents reported persistent eye irritation. Local fishermen similarly abandoned trips out to sea after encountering severe eye discomfort from airborne particles.

Resident Aldi Candra Prayogi told Kompas that the ash felt like “small grains of sand had gotten into my eyes” starting Friday evening, requiring frequent use of eye drops for relief. He added that the dust accumulated so rapidly that he had to sweep his front yard every five minutes.

Tsunami Status and Volcanic History

Authorities confirmed that no tsunami warning is linked to this recent eruptive phase of the volcano, which sits in the Sunda Strait between the major islands of Java and Sumatra. Anak Krakatau—meaning Child of Krakatoa—emerged from the sea early in the last century within the caldera left by the cataclysmic 1883 eruption of Mount Krakatoa.

The volcano suffered a catastrophic flank collapse in December 2018 that generated a lethal tsunami, killing more than 400 people and displacing thousands along the surrounding coasts of Sumatra and Java. Scientific assessments following the 2018 disaster revealed that some of the collapsing rock chunks measured roughly 70 to 90 meters high.

Geological Setting in the Ring of Fire

Indonesia’s frequent seismic and volcanic activity stems from its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire. This horseshoe-shaped tectonic belt stretches approximately 40,000 kilometers from the southern tip of South America to New Zealand. The region accounts for roughly 90 percent of all global earthquakes and hosts approximately 75 percent of Earth’s active volcanoes, totaling 452 active individual volcanic systems.
