Bitcoin-Linked Liquid Network Hacked for $320 Million

The Liquid Network, a blockchain platform engineered for faster transactions, confirmed in a post on X that approximately 4,000 out of its 4,200 bitcoins held within the Liquid Federation wallet were taken. According to Liquid Network, the actors behind the breach are characterized as “purported white-hat hackers” who typically relocate funds after uncovering vulnerabilities to return them, frequently in exchange for a fee. The organization halted all new transactions immediately following the incident. “Liquid wallets will be impacted, and we’re sorry for any inconvenience,” the network stated, noting that federation members are actively working to restore normal operations.

Liquid Network Suffers Major Reserve Drain

Infrastructure Vulnerabilities and Transaction Methods

Launched in 2018 by Blockstream—a blockchain technology company co-founded by cryptographer Adam Back—the Liquid Network is managed by a federation comprising over 80 exchanges, asset managers, and infrastructure firms. Liquid Network reported that funds were withdrawn via SideSwap, though the primary key itself remained uncompromised. The platform issues Liquid Bitcoin, or L-BTC, backed by actual locked bitcoins, to bypass the congestion and high fees associated with the main Bitcoin blockchain.

Aneirin Flynn, chief executive of cybersecurity firm FailSafe, stated that preliminary evidence suggests the existence of a bug that enabled the unauthorized minting of L-BTC. The breach “is the latest in a spate of attacks exposing weaknesses in crypto infrastructure in 2026,” Flynn noted, adding that the drainage of roughly 95 percent of reserves highlights severe vulnerabilities within Liquid’s validation and backing model.

Broader Industry Impact and Recent Breaches

The security failure compounds a difficult period for digital-asset platforms. Last week, an attacker drained $6 million from a Crypto.com-linked digital-asset lending platform. In August, a security breach affecting the offline Bitcoin wallet Coldcard prompted renewed scrutiny regarding secure storage methods for the cryptocurrency. Blockstream lists several prominent exchanges as users of the Liquid Network, including BTSE and Bitfinex—the latter sharing a parent company with Tether, the world’s largest stablecoin issuer—as well as BitMEX, which announced plans to shut down in September. Representatives for Liquid Network and Blockstream did not immediately respond to emailed requests for comment.
