Pisa Orders Urgent Dengue Disinfestation After New Local Case

Pisa Mayor Michele Conti signed an urgent municipal ordinance ordering mandatory mosquito disinfection across public and private properties. The drastic measure follows confirmation from the local health authority of a new local case of Dengue fever. Crucially, the patient contracted the virus locally without any history of travel to countries where the disease is endemic.

Urgent Municipal Decree Issued After Local Transmission

Targeted Larvicidal and Adulticidal Operations

The municipal decree activates extraordinary larvicidal and adulticidal treatments within a specific perimeter established by health officials. Crews are deploying across public areas, private properties, street drains, and catchbasins. Workers are also conducting door-to-door inspections to locate and eliminate active larval breeding sites. According to municipal directives, adulticide treatments take place during the early morning hours or at sunset to maximize effectiveness and minimize public exposure.

Political Friction Over Preventive Authority

Mayor Conti called the epidemiological situation increasingly concerning due to the lack of travel history in the latest patient. Municipal authorities are executing all mandatory containment protocols. Yet Conti renewed calls for regional leadership to alter current restrictions. He urged Tuscany Region President Giani to grant mayors the authority to conduct preventive adulticide treatments before local transmission cases emerge rather than waiting for confirmed infections.

Strict Access Mandates and Resident Precautions

Property owners, condominium administrators, and commercial operators within the affected zone must grant sanitation crews access to courtyards, gardens, and terraces. Residents are required to follow specific safety protocols during the operations:

  • Keep windows and doors tightly closed while suspending air exchange systems.
  • Keep domestic pets indoors and protect outdoor animal shelters, food bowls, and water troughs.
  • Harvest home-grown fruits and vegetables before treatments begin or protect plants with plastic sheeting.
  • Wait 15 days before consuming any produce exposed to treatments, ensuring items are thoroughly washed and peeled.
  • Clean outdoor children’s toys, furniture, and fixtures with washable or disposable gloves.
  • Wash skin thoroughly with soap and water in the event of accidental contact with insecticides.
