Approximately one week after the official start of the training year on September 1, thousands of apprenticeship positions remain vacant across North Rhine-Westphalia, while many young people continue their search for a placement, according to regional chambers of commerce. The situation highlights an ongoing mismatch in the regional labor market, where employers across multiple sectors report open roles alongside active job seekers.
Düsseldorf Chamber Reports Openings and Seekers
In the Düsseldorf district, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK Düsseldorf) estimates that roughly 750 apprenticeship positions in IHK-regulated professions remain unfilled. At the same time, demand among young applicants remains high. According to the IHK Düsseldorf, 1,119 young people were still searching for an apprenticeship placement in Düsseldorf alone at the end of August.
Widespread Vacancies Across Regional Industries
The labor shortage extends beyond a single sector or city in the region. The Niederrheinische IHK reports that free apprenticeship positions exist across virtually all branches of industry. Meanwhile, the Düsseldorf Handwerkskammer (Chamber of Skilled Trades) points to several dozen open apprenticeships spanning roughly 30 different trades that still need to be filled.
