Russia Closes German Consulate in St. Petersburg Amid Diplomatic Escalation

Russia announced the closure of the German consulate in Saint-Petersburg on Monday, marking a sharp escalation in diplomatic tensions between Moscow and Berlin. According to statements from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the consulate must cease its operations no later than September 18, and all of its employees must leave Russian territory by that date.

The retaliatory move follows a decision by Berlin last week to close the final Russian consulate on German soil, located in Bonn, alongside the Russian cultural center in Berlin, as reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP). According to German authorities, those closures were ordered after investigators discovered an explosives-laden drone at Leipzig airport in early August. Leipzig serves as a crucial military platform for the German armed forces, NATO, and logistical support for Ukraine.

Expulsion of Goethe-Institut Staff and Diplomatic Reciprocity

In addition to shuttering the diplomatic mission, Moscow ordered the termination of German cultural centers across its territory, specifically targeting the Goethe-Institut. The Russian foreign ministry stated that employees of the Goethe-Institut must depart Russia by September 13.

Moscow summoned the German charge d’affaires last week to formally denounce what it called the “anti-Russian actions and statements of the German authorities.” In its official statement on Monday, the Russian foreign ministry asserted that Berlin initiated the latest cycle of bilateral escalation. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov separately accused Berlin on Saturday of seeking a renewed confrontation with Russia.

Background on Diplomatic Retaliation

Diplomatic expulsions and facility closures have steadily degraded relations between Russia and Western European nations.

Under the enforced timeline, German diplomatic staff in Saint-Petersburg face a September 18 deadline to wrap up operations and exit the country.
