College Football Week 2 Rankings: Ohio State Takes No. 1 Spot

The Ohio State Buckeyes claimed the No. 1 ranking in both the Associated Press Top 25 and the FBS Coaches Poll for Week 2 of the 2025 college football season, according to FBSchedules.com. Ohio State secured the top spot following a hard-fought 14-7 victory over the previously top-ranked Texas Longhorns.

How the Top Five Shook Out After Week 1

According to FBSchedules.com, Ohio State earned 55 first-place votes in the AP Poll to lock down the premier position, while Penn State captured seven first-place votes to sit at No. 2. The LSU Tigers made one of the biggest leaps of the week, surging six spots to No. 3 in the AP Poll after securing a 17-10 win against then-fourth-ranked Clemson. The Georgia Bulldogs and the Miami Hurricanes rounded out the AP top five at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.

The Coaches Poll presented a slightly different configuration among the elite tier. While Ohio State and Penn State held the top two spots with 59 and six first-place votes respectively, the Georgia Bulldogs claimed the No. 3 position, followed by LSU at No. 4 and the Oregon Ducks at No. 5, according to FBSchedules.com.

Falling Giants and Risers in the Polls

Following its defensive battle against Ohio State, the Texas Longhorns slid down the leaderboards. According to FBSchedules.com, Texas dropped to No. 7 in the AP Poll and No. 6 in the Coaches Poll. Clemson similarly drifted down to No. 8 in both major polls following their tight loss to LSU.

Further down the rankings, the Iowa State Cyclones matched LSU’s six-spot rise, climbing to No. 16 in the AP Poll after a dominant 55-7 victory over South Dakota, as reported by FBSchedules.com. Meanwhile, Kansas State and Boise State completely exited both top-25 polls. Kansas State dropped out following a 24-21 Week Zero loss to Iowa State, while Boise State fell out after a 34-7 defeat against South Florida.

FCS Poll Leaders

In the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 Poll, North Dakota State maintained a firm grip on the top spot, capturing 53 of the 56 possible first-place votes, according to FBSchedules.com. The South Dakota State Jackrabbits followed at second with two first-place votes, and Montana State secured third place with one first-place vote.
