A seven-year-old boy from East Sussex in England suffered a stroke after his symptoms were initially flagged by the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT, according to reports published in May and June by Kennedy News and Media and outlets such as People and Medical Daily UK.
Initial Symptoms and AI Consultation
In May, seven-year-old Junior Fahr experienced a tingling sensation in his legs and weakness on the left side of his body while swimming, according to accounts provided by his mother, Evangelynne Williams. Concerned by the sudden onset of symptoms, Williams researched the signs online and inputted them into ChatGPT. According to People, the AI chatbot suggested a possible stroke and advised seeking immediate medical evaluation.
Williams brought her son to a hospital following the chatbot’s prompt. Medical staff performed basic physical checks, including finger-movement tests, but did not order a brain scan or advanced imaging, according to Williams’ account reported by People. The family was discharged and advised to return if the symptoms recurred.
Deterioration and Emergency Surgery
Six weeks after the initial hospital visit, Junior’s condition worsened significantly. Medical Daily UK reported that the boy awoke vomiting multiple times, appeared confused, could not walk independently, and kept his eyes closed. On June 25, Williams rushed him back to the hospital as he began suffering seizures and experiencing severe pain.
Subsequent brain scans revealed that Junior had suffered a stroke caused by a blocked cerebral artery. Williams told reporters she was unaware that children could experience strokes. Hospital staff transferred the boy to a specialized facility where surgeons performed an emergency operation to remove the blood clot. Junior was then placed in a medically induced coma for more than three weeks.
Recovery and Ongoing Rehabilitation
Junior was discharged from the hospital on August 11. Williams stated that her son has regained the abilities to speak and move. Through a GoFundMe campaign established to help cover the family’s financial burdens during the recovery period, Williams noted that Junior can now walk short distances with assistance and a leg brace, though he still relies on a wheelchair to build strength and independence.
Williams also shared that the stroke resulted in brain damage affecting Junior’s behavior and development. She went public with the family’s experience to raise awareness among parents and medical professionals that pediatric stroke can occur, hoping to prevent delayed diagnoses in other children.
