African students applying for British higher education will face higher financial hurdles starting November 30, 2026, as the UK government implements revised immigration rules that raise required proof of living expenses to the equivalent of $19,100, according to official government updates reported by Business Insider Africa.
New UK Visa Funding Thresholds and Regional Breakdowns
Under the revised regulations presented to the UK Parliament on September 3, international applicants must demonstrate increased maintenance funds to cover living costs separate from tuition. Students studying in London must now show £1,570 per month, up from the previous requirement of £1,529. Over a standard nine-month academic period, this brings the total maintenance requirement in the capital to £14,130, which translates to approximately $19,100.
For applicants studying outside London, the monthly requirement increases to £1,203 from £1,171. Over nine months, students outside the capital will need to show £10,827, or approximately $14,630, representing an increase of £288 over the previous threshold. Applicants must hold these required funds in their accounts for 28 days before submitting their visa applications.
Impact on Nigerian and Wider African Student Enrolments
The adjustments affect applicants across the African continent, including those from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Rwanda, Egypt, Morocco, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Cameroon. The policy carries particular weight for Nigeria, which remains one of the primary source markets for international students heading to Britain.

UK Home Office figures show that the UK granted 26,060 Sponsored Study visas to Nigerian main applicants in the year ending June 2026. This volume accounted for 7% of all study visas granted globally during that period, positioning Nigeria as the third-largest source of international students behind China and India. Across all nationalities, the UK issued 365,868 Sponsored Study visas to main applicants during the same timeframe, marking a 12% decline from the previous year.
Broader Immigration Policy Shifts and Additional Costs
The updated financial thresholds align with maintenance loans designated for domestic home students for the 2026/27 academic year and are scheduled for annual review by the Home Office. This change builds on a series of stricter immigration measures introduced since 2024 aimed at reforming the student visa route.

Since January 2024, most international students enrolled in taught postgraduate courses have been barred from bringing dependants and face tighter restrictions on switching to work visas prior to completing their studies. Beyond demonstrating maintenance funds, student visa applicants must also factor in mandatory administrative expenses, including the standard visa application fee and the annual Immigration Health Surcharge of £776 per year, alongside separate university tuition charges.
