New Covid Subvariant BA.3.2 Detected in Argentina

The Argentine Ministry of Health confirmed the detection of the first three cases of the COVID-19 subvariant BA.3.2 in the province of Buenos Aires, according to the latest National Epidemiological Bulletin. Health authorities stated that the lineage currently poses a low risk to public health, while overall virus circulation remains low and stable across the country.

Detection of BA.3.2 Cases in Argentina

The Argentine Ministry of Health, led by Mario Lugones, reported the initial detection of the BA.3.2 subvariant within the country in its latest epidemiological update. According to the genomic monitoring results published in the National Epidemiological Bulletin, all three identified patients reside in the province of Buenos Aires. The cohort consists of one adult and two older adults, with one patient currently hospitalized due to underlying medical comorbidities.

Despite the detection of this new lineage, the official report indicates that overall COVID-19 transmission throughout Argentina remains at low and stable levels for the year. This baseline activity contrasts with higher detection rates observed for influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) during the same monitoring period.

Global Origins and Characteristics of the BA.3.2 Lineage

The BA.3.2 lineage descends from the Omicron BA.3 variant and was first identified in South Africa in November 2024, prompting its classification as a Variant Under Monitoring (VUM). Within the Americas region, the GISAID database has previously recorded detections only in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, and French Guiana.

Genomic surveillance shows that BA.3.2 has not demonstrated increased transmission growth rates or greater disease severity, measured through hospitalizations and mortality, compared to other circulating strains. However, health officials noted a marked immune evasion profile.

The Ministry of Health reported that the subvariant carries a moderate immune escape risk, generating substantially lower neutralizing antibody titers than lineages descended from JN.1 and current vaccine antigens. Despite this reduction in neutralization capacity, available data confirms that existing COVID-19 vaccines continue to provide protection against severe disease.
