Agricultural firms and regional technical teams are preparing for a crop season shaped by abundant moisture reserves and potential water excesses. According to Fernando Giachetti, product development manager at Supra Semillas, producers should prioritize high-potential hybrids that offer broad versatility across different planting windows to convert favorable moisture conditions into productive yields.

Hybrid Selection and Planting Flexibility

Selecting the right hybrid allows growers to adapt to unpredictable weather patterns and localized water surpluses, according to Supra Semillas. In an interview detailing management approaches for high-moisture years, Giachetti highlighted the performance of the S3972 VIP3 hybrid.

“In a year like this, we prioritize hybrids of high potential and broad planting versatility, such as the S3972 VIP3,” Giachetti explained, noting that early planting combined with appropriate technology achieves maximum yield targets. If water excesses, including high water tables or frequent rains, force planting delays, growers can adjust the planting date without sacrificing yield.

Additional alternatives within the Supra Semillas portfolio provide environmental stability and high baseline yields. According to the company, hybrids such as the S13-160 VIP3, S19-120 VIP3, and S3916 VIP3 offer strong compensatory capacity and robust health across various regions, while the S7510 hybrid is specifically adapted for northern agricultural zones with high tolerance to corn stunt disease.

Fractionated Fertilization and Water Table Management

High water availability requires customized lot management rather than uniform field applications, particularly to protect root development. According to Giachetti, extreme wet conditions heighten the risk of nitrogen loss through leaching and denitrification.

“With an extreme El Niño, the key is to fractionate fertilization to reduce nitrogen losses by leaching and denitrification, which are very frequent in wet years,” Giachetti stated. Splitting nutrient applications maintains fertilizer efficiency and prevents nitrogen loss before the crop absorbs it.

Water table monitoring represents another critical management factor. Supra Semillas advises monitoring shallow water tables and avoiding planting in fields where water levels rise above 1.4 meters to prevent root exposure to anaerobic conditions.

Sanitation and Risk Diversification

Wet growing conditions increase the incidence of specific crop diseases, making sanitary profiles as important as yield potential. Giachetti warned that campaigns with elevated humidity often bring uncommon diseases such as bacteriosis, reinforcing the value of healthy genetic packages like the S3972 VIP3, which features a short cycle designed to facilitate early harvest and avoid transitability issues caused by frequent rains.

To mitigate climate exposure, agronomists advise against concentrating all acreage into early planting windows. Spreading risk by reserving high-quality fields for late planting helps stabilize overall yields, according to company recommendations.

Insights from Regional Trials

Field trials conducted by the CREA Teodelina network in southern Santa Fe illustrate how water availability and nutrient management interact across different environments. Analyzing data from the 2024/25 and 2025/26 campaigns, agronomist Rovea noted that baseline water differences shifted average yields from 10,000 to 11,000 kg/ha up to 14,000 kg/ha under favorable profile moisture and water table influences.
