€65 Billion in Raw Materials Hidden in Old Electronics

Unused household electronics and small appliances discarded across the European Union contain valuable raw materials worth an estimated 65 billion euros, according to a new study. Despite the economic and environmental potential of recycling these items, consumers store obsolete devices in basements and drawers due to data privacy concerns and a preference for keeping backup hardware.

Why Consumers Hoard Electronic Waste

Old smartphones, laptops, and kitchen appliances frequently end up in home storage rather than recycling facilities. According to Nando Erne, media spokesperson for SENS eRecycling, a foundation operating Switzerland’s nationwide take-back system for electronic goods, disposing of electronics is rarely treated as a routine household task. Consumers often postpone the chore and place devices out of sight in cellars or storage drawers.

Another major driver of hoarding is safety anxiety regarding personal data. Many device owners refuse to return smartphones or computers because they lack certainty that personal files have been permanently erased, as Erne noted. Additionally, citizens frequently keep older functional items—such as a spare raclette grill or toaster—as backup replacements in case newly purchased appliances fail.

Household Accumulation and EU Estimates

Data from the WEEE Forum, a pan-European association representing electronic waste take-back systems, indicates that the average European household possesses nine unused electronic items alongside four broken devices. While specific comprehensive totals for Switzerland remain unmeasured, higher average incomes in the country suggest that Swiss households likely store even higher per capita volumes of unused hardware.

To combat this accumulation, recycling organizations attempt to leverage natural consumer habits. SENS eRecycling encourages citizens to clear out old electronics during seasonal events like spring cleaning, while also advocating for increased visibility of local collection points to make drop-offs as straightforward as possible.

The Complex Economics of Material Recovery

Once collected, electronic devices undergo processing to extract valuable industrial metals. According to Erne, recovery facilities routinely harvest copper and aluminum to reintroduce them into the manufacturing supply chain. However, recovering Critical Raw Materials like rare earth elements presents significant technological and economic hurdles.

While rare earth elements possess immense value due to supply scarcity and utility in modern manufacturing, their minute presence within individual gadgets makes extraction exceptionally difficult. Current processing technologies often render the extraction of these trace elements economically unviable and ecologically inefficient, as the required effort and cost outweigh the material yield.
