For retired physician Dr. Frank Foti, whose home office in Erie serves as a personal memorial, the anniversary remains intensely personal due to the loss of his brother, New York Fire Department firefighter Robert “Bobby” Foti. According to Erie News Now, a photograph preserved in Frank Foti’s collection is believed to be the last image of Bobby alive, showing him walking at the back of his battalion toward the South Tower. Investigators and family accounts indicate that Bobby’s battalion entered the South Tower lobby just as the building collapsed. His body was never recovered.
Narrow Escapes and Ground Zero Realities
The tragedy nearly struck the Foti family twice. According to Erie News Now, Frank’s youngest brother, Joseph, was also a New York City firefighter who was off duty that day. Joseph grabbed his gear and headed toward the towers, narrowly escaping the collapse that occurred as he walked toward the site.
