Set for an official release on 18 September 2026, with pre-orders already open, the wearable starts at AUD$649. The device expands on previous fitness and physiological tracking capabilities by increasing heart rate variability (HRV) sampling up to 24 times more frequently than older generations.
Advanced Health Sensing and Monitoring Architecture
The Apple Watch Series 12 features a redesigned Health Sensing System positioned directly underneath the case, utilizing larger and more power-efficient green LEDs within its optical heart sensor. Alongside optical monitoring, the device includes an electrical heart sensor, a blood oxygen sensor, and a temperature sensor to capture comprehensive physiological metrics.
Apple backs its claim of delivering the most accurate heart-rate sensing in a wearable with an in-house study involving more than 1,000 participants, which compared performance against other leading wearables. To manage the influx of new physiological data, the Heart Rate app splits HRV into two distinct views: recovery HRV, which highlights daily stress and recovery signals, and overall HRV, which provides a broader view of health over time. Overnight vitals incorporate recovery HRV against a personal baseline, while a new daytime vitals view displays changes before bedtime.
Readiness Score and Performance Metrics
Integrating the continuous data streams from the new sensors, the Apple Watch Series 12 introduces a Readiness score. Rather than summarizing past performance, the Readiness score assesses what the body is capable of handling on the current day.
