Joel initially sought help from a neurologist after experiencing unsteadiness and a persistent rocking sensation. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) involves a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain’s ventricles, which typically impacts older adults by causing difficulties with walking, thinking, reasoning, and bladder control. Joel noted that he initially rejected the recommendation for a shunt after learning the procedure required drilling through his skull. However, he changed his mind after researching the treatment and realizing it could alleviate his balance issues and memory concerns. Joel stated that the subsequent procedure successfully improved his memory, balance, and general functioning.

Concert Cancellations and Medical Warnings on Stage Volume

Before his diagnosis became public on May 23, 2025, Joel’s team announced the cancellation of all remaining tour dates through July 2026, which included major stadium appearances alongside Sting, Stevie Nicks, and Rod Stewart. These cancellations followed an earlier postponement in March 2025 for what his team initially described as recent surgery and physical therapy. Following his treatment, Joel’s doctors issued a strict warning regarding his career, stating that the intense volume of his live rock performances generated concussion-like effects that strained his recovering brain. Despite these limitations, Joel made a brief return to the stage on January 2, 2026, using a cane to join a tribute band in Wellington, Florida, for a surprise performance.
