AI and Art: Explore the “KunstSommer” at Nuremberg’s Future Museum

The Deutsches Museum Nürnberg has launched its “Kunstsommer” exhibition series, featuring controversial installations that explore artificial intelligence, military surveillance, and chronic illness.

Military AI Installation Raises Surveillance Questions

Visitors stepping into the museum’s “Zukunftsmuseum” encounter a helium-filled airship floating quietly overhead, equipped with a thermal imaging camera that scans movements below. Developed by artists Marta Revuelta and Laurent Weingart, the installation titled “Droning” projects visitor tracking data onto a large screen, where an AI system classifies individuals as “dangerous” or “neutral.” According to the creators, the underlying technology originates from military applications and was trained using actual combat data. The exhibit runs through mid-September 2026, forcing audiences to confront automated threat assessment in a hypothetical yet starkly realistic art setting.

Exploring Chronic Pain Through Comics

Shifting from high-tech surveillance to human biology, the exhibition “Schmerz! Comic meets Rheuma” examines the daily realities of living with chronic pain. According to museum documentation, the display grew out of direct collaborations between rheumatism patients and comic artists, illustrating the challenges and personal impact of chronic illness. Running through October 4, 2026, the project pairs visual narratives with broader philosophical questions regarding the biological function of pain and the concept of a pain-free society.

Generative AI and Creative Ownership

Rounding out the summer lineup, the “pAInt” station by artist Niklas Zidarov invites visitors to apply brushstrokes that a generative AI transforms in real time into various artistic styles. Guests can download their completed digital works via QR code.
