Barry Melrose, the unmistakable face and hair of an entire generation of American hockey fans, died Wednesday at age 70. Melrose spent more than three decades as ESPN’s lead hockey analyst before retiring after he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
Broadcasting Career and Iconic Studio Persona
Paired with John Buccigross in the studio or Steve Levy in the booth, Melrose combined the role of a hockey voice of reason with an outsized cartoon character. Known for his tailored suits and signature mullet, Melrose delivered blunt assessments of struggling teams. That distinct presentation established him as a reassuring, familiar figure for U.S. hockey fans during turbulent periods for the National Hockey League, including the post-lockout era when television rights shifted.
Playing Days and 1993 Coaching Run with Los Angeles
Before his television career, Melrose played nine seasons as a defenseman in the WHA and NHL with Cincinnati, Winnipeg, Toronto, and Detroit. After hanging up his skates, he transitioned to coaching and found success in the American Hockey League before the Los Angeles Kings hired him in 1992 at age 35.
Behind the Los Angeles bench, Melrose coached a physical squad featuring Wayne Gretzky that led the Campbell Conference in shots on goal and the NHL in penalties taken during the 1992-93 season. In the opening round of the playoffs, down 2-1, Melrose benched veteran goaltender Kelly Hrudey in favor of rookie Robb Stauber, who secured three straight wins to advance the team. The Kings eventually reached the Final before losing to Montreal, and Melrose was fired after two more subpar seasons, punctuated by a brief, unsuccessful stint in Tampa in 2008.

Melrose joined ESPN in 1995 and remained a fixture of the network’s hockey coverage for decades.
