As Pitchfork points out in a review, Morby is far from the first artist to leave the big city behind, trading the urban centers that defined earlier works like 2013’s Harlem River (New York) and 2016’s Singing Saw (Los Angeles) for a Midwestern residence equipped with a garden and hot tub. According to Pitchfork’s reporting, a natural parallel can be drawn to Bob Dylan and the Band’s legendary The Basement Tapes, which were put to tape in Saugerties, New York, following an extensive period of touring. Pitchfork notes that A Night at the Little Los Angeles comprises a series of 4-track demos recorded at Morby’s home in Kansas City, offering a warm and fulsome window into the genesis of the music he later sculpted with producer Brad Cook for his 2020 release, Sundowner. Rather than throwaway cuts from the studio floor, Pitchfork describes the 10 pared-back recordings as distillations that frequently outshine later iterations. Tracks like “Campfire” feature a warm, beckoning meandering guitar and unadorned vocals, while “Don’t Underestimate the Midwest American Sun” utilizes peripatetic piano keys that transition from a pleading tone to a defiant stance, according to Pitchfork.
Evaluating the Lo-Fi Catalog
While the stripped-down format suits inward-facing twilight ballads focusing on loss and longing, some tracks on the demo collection struggle without fuller instrumentation, according to Pitchfork. Pitchfork points out that the track “Sundowner” feels lethargic without the honeyed thrum of bass and melodic trills, and “Brother, Sister” attempts to evoke the mood of a Morricone Western.
