How Sentinel Chicken Surveillance Works

In locations such as Ventura County, California, and throughout Delaware, public health departments maintain stationary flocks of chickens in protected enclosures. According to Steve Solomon of the Ventura County Vector Control Program, the birds act as a biological early warning system analogous to a canary in a coal mine. Chickens serve as dead-end hosts for the virus; if bitten by an infected mosquito, the bird develops antibodies but cannot transmit the pathogen back to mosquitoes or humans, nor do they typically suffer fatal symptoms. Technicians collect small blood samples from the chickens’ combs every two weeks and send them to state laboratories for testing. Tom Moran, head of the mosquito control section at the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, noted that Delaware has maintained flocks of four chickens across 20 strategic locations since the early 1980s as a reliable standard for virus tracking.
