Jakob Ingebrigtsen has withdrawn from the men’s 1,500-meter race at the Ultimate Championship in Budapest, according to a video statement released by the athlete on his official Instagram account on Saturday afternoon. The decision eliminates a highly anticipated track duel against Josh Kerr, citing a need for physical recovery following a demanding two-year stretch marked by injuries and Achilles surgery.
Ingebrigtsen Cites Recovery and Injury History
According to his statement filmed after a treadmill session, Ingebrigtsen explained that he is not currently positioned to contest back-to-back championship finals. The 1,500-meter final arrived just 48 hours after his victory in the 5,000-meter final on Friday night, which he won in Budapest. He pointed to the physical toll of his recent recovery path, noting that he is forced to be sensible after dealing with Achilles surgery he underwent in February and subsequent rehabilitation.
“I’ve made the decision not to participate in the 1500m,” Ingebrigtsen stated in his video message. “Unfortunately, I’m not in a position where I’m able to go back-to-back races, a little bit for the same reasons why I did not double in Birmingham. I would love for it to be a little bit different and to be a little bit sharper in terms of recovery, but coming from a very difficult last two years with injury problems and Achilles surgery, I’m forced to be more sensible than I would like to be.”
Field Adjustments and Event Background
The 1,500-meter showdown at the Ultimate Championship had been specially structured to bring top rivals together. According to event reporting, qualification rules based on world rankings and championship results meant neither Ingebrigtsen nor Kerr had initially secured a 1,500-meter spot on direct merit due to limited racing volumes in 2026. Organizers expanded the field to 13 runners and funded an extra prize to ensure both athletes could compete.
With Ingebrigtsen’s withdrawal, the race proceeds with 12 athletes on Sunday. Josh Kerr enters as the fastest runner in the field this year with a mark of 3:27.62. American runners Cole Hocker—who finished second to Ingebrigtsen in the 5,000-meter race—and Yared Nuguse highlight the remaining competitors, alongside Isaac Nader, Cameron Myers, Jake Wightman, Timothy Cheruiyot, Azeddine Habz, Hobbs Kessler, Ethan Strand, Robert Farken, and Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech.
Upcoming Schedule in Copenhagen
Despite skipping the 1,500-meter event, Ingebrigtsen remains scheduled to compete next Saturday in the men’s 5K at the World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen. World Athletics positioned the Budapest track finals and the Copenhagen road races as a consecutive-weekend global double.
Ingebrigtsen indicated he will watch Sunday’s 1,500-meter final from the stands, stating that he expects an amazing race to follow before turning his training focus toward preparations for the 2027 season.
