During the summit’s opening sessions, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, greeting him as a “dear friend” at Kazan airport. Putin stated that Russian-Chinese cooperation serves as a vital stabilizing factor in the global arena, while Xi described their bilateral ties as a profound friendship navigating a chaotic international landscape. Both nations seek to counter what they characterize as a US-dominated world order, building on an agreement of “no limits” declared shortly before the full-scale conflict in Ukraine began.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also met with Putin in Kazan, where discussions turned directly toward the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Modi emphasized that disputes must be resolved through peaceful means and voiced full support for rapid efforts to restore peace and stability. Meanwhile, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa reaffirmed his country’s diplomatic alignment during his bilateral meeting, telling Putin that Moscow remains a valued ally and friend that supported South Africa from the anti-Apartheid struggle through to the present day.
