Review: Tobias Kratzer’s “Macbeth” at Hamburg State Opera

The Hamburgische Staatsoper premiered its new production of Giuseppe Verdi’s Macbeth, directed by Tobias Kratzer and conducted by Tomáš Hanus, trading grand theatrical machinery for an intimate chamber drama set inside a domestic living room. According to reviews of the opening performance, the staging focuses on a psychological power struggle between the title characters, portrayed by Kartal Karagedik and Nino Machaidze, though critics noted that the musical execution under Hanus lacked the required dramatic tension and mystical color.

Trading Grand Spectacle for a Domestic Telenovela

Director Tobias Kratzer chose to scale back large-scale spectacle in favor of a focused, stripped-down setting. The central visual element on stage is a carpeted living room featuring a mirror and a wooden chair, framed by a dark wooden staircase construction. According to stage production notes, the concept casts the Scottish royal couple as a modern family unit, where Macbeth and his wife navigate murder and ambition against a domestic backdrop. Despite the minimalist set, traditional theatrical elements remain, including artificial rain falling from the fly loft under counter-illumination.

Orchestral Uniformity and Vocal Demands

Musical execution on opening night drew mixed assessments from critics. Conductor Tomáš Hanus led the orchestra with a steady pulse that reviewers characterized as overly uniform, contrasting sharply with the faster tempos typically favored by General Music Director Omer Meir Wellber. According to musical analysis of the performance, Hanus’s interpretation missed the transitional tension between keys and failed to supply the dark atmosphere demanded by Verdi’s score. Vocalists Kartal Karagedik and Nino Machaidze delivered committed performances as the murderous couple, though reviewers observed that they occasionally struggled to sustain the expansive phrases required by the demanding vocal writing.

From Promotional Mystery to the Final Finale

The production’s promotional campaign originally featured striking imagery of a figure in a natural setting, which generated high anticipation for a dark, sweeping thriller. However, the final staging pivoted sharply toward a stark character study. Kratzer incorporated thematic callbacks throughout the narrative, such as the character of Fleanzio—the son of Banquo—escaping in a yellow raincoat and reappearing in the finale wearing a traditional northern German slicker, known locally as an Ostfriesennerz, signaling that the cycle of royal succession is poised to repeat.
