The Russian-flagged vessel, which previously operated under the name Jumbo, became the focus of a military deployment after 4:00 PM on September 14, 2026. According to reporting by the Irish Independent, an Irish Air Corps C-295 surveillance aircraft flew to the Atlantic sector where the tanker operated.

The aircraft conducted observations in the area before flying toward the Clare coastline near Doonbeg, where it remained for several hours. The maritime tracking and aerial surveillance coincided with the final round of the Irish Open at Doonbeg, where Donald Trump was a VIP attendee at his local golf club.

International Sanctions and Shadow Fleet Concerns

The vessel involved in the incident has faced multiple international sanctions due to its alleged role in activities linked to Russia’s war against Ukraine. According to the Irish Independent, the ship was sanctioned while operating under the name Jumbo and falsely flying the flag of Sierra Leone before changing its name to Dozor in August 2026.

Maritime security officials have raised concerns regarding Russia’s use of a "shadow fleet" of tankers featuring complex ownership structures to bypass international sanctions on crude oil exports. Authorities note that certain vessels within these fleets have been monitored for potential surveillance activities, as well as the manipulation or disabling of tracking data to obscure their movements.

East Coast Drone Sightings Under Investigation

The maritime monitoring operation followed a separate security incident reported off Ireland’s east coast earlier in the month. According to the Irish Independent, Gardaí and the Defence Forces launched an investigation after a commercial airline crew reported sighting a "large drone" flying at more than 1,829 meters.

The sighting occurred on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, approximately 16 kilometers south of Howth Head, just days prior to Donald Trump’s arrival in the country. Air traffic control was informed that the crew observed a "quite large" drone moving toward the coastline, though State security services were initially unable to corroborate the report.
