Former West Ham United, QPR, and Czech Republic goalkeeper Ludek Miklosko has died at the age of 64, according to statements released by West Ham United. Miklosko, widely celebrated by supporters as a gentle giant and inspirational figure, passed away following a brave and courageous battle with cancer, as confirmed by his son, Martin Miklosko, and the club.
Diagnosed with cancer in 2021, Miklosko ultimately decided to withdraw from his treatment in December 2024, according to BBC Sport and Yahoo Sports UK. Just days after withdrawing from treatment, he made an emotional return to West Ham’s London Stadium for a Premier League fixture against Liverpool, where he received a standing ovation from the crowd.
“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of my dad Ludek, following a brave and courageous battle with cancer,” Martin Miklosko said, according to BBC Sport. “Dad simply loved West Ham United, and especially hearing his name sung loud and proud at every game.”
West Ham Career and Legacy
Miklosko cemented his legendary status in east London after moving from Banik Ostrava for a fee of approximately £300,000 in February 1990, following a successful trial, as reported by Yahoo Sports UK. Over eight years with the Hammers, he made nearly 400 total appearances—373 in league and major competition—anchoring the defense through an era of high-stakes football.
In his first full season, Miklosko won the club’s player of the year award and played a vital role in helping West Ham secure promotion to the English top-flight in 1991. He earned two promotions to the top division during his time at Upton Park and helped the club reach the semi-finals of both the FA Cup and the Football League Cup.
Beyond his heroics for the Hammers, Miklosko played a memorable role in English football history on the final day of the 1994-95 Premier League season. Stints with QPR and International Play
After leaving West Ham, Miklosko joined Queens Park Rangers in 1998 following an initial loan spell.
