La Rochelle – Île de Ré Airport handled over 100,000 passengers across July and August 2026, marking the facility’s busiest summer season on record, according to Bertrand Ayral, president of the Syndicat mixte des aéroports de La Rochelle – Ile de Ré et Rochefort – Charente-Maritime.
Summer Traffic Growth and Load Factors
Passenger numbers climbed across both peak summer months, with 54,593 travelers passing through the terminal in July—a 10.2% increase over July 2025—followed by 55,017 passengers in August, representing a 5.2% bump. According to airport administration data, airlines maintained an average seat load factor of 88.6% across the two-month period. Three specific routes exceeded 90% capacity: Marseille led with a 95.0% load factor, followed by Dublin at 92.4% and Geneva at 91.4%.
The record-breaking summer performance keeps the airport on track to approach its historic annual traffic high of 303,669 passengers set in 2025. Total traffic through the end of August 2026 stood at 222,785 passengers, down 2.1% from the same eight-month stretch in 2025. Airport officials attribute this minor dip to a shortened operating window for the Porto route, which ran for four months from June to September 2026 compared to ten months in 2025. That schedule reduction followed network cuts by Ryanair in response to a tripling of France’s solidarity tax on plane tickets.
International Reach and Economic Impact
International travelers accounted for 81% of the airport’s traffic during July and August 2026, underscoring the region’s drawing power for foreign visitors. The United Kingdom remained the primary market, generating 39.5% of the summer traffic. Ireland followed as the second-largest market with 17.3%, trailed by Belgium at 8.3%, Portugal at 5.6%, Switzerland at 5.3%, and Morocco at 5.0%. Domestic French routes made up the remaining 18.1% of passenger movements.
Visitor spending tied to the airport creates substantial regional revenue. A passenger survey conducted for 2025 estimated that visitors arriving via La Rochelle – Île de Ré contributed 48 million euros in direct spending during their stays. A similar survey is underway for the 2026 season to update visitor profiles and economic impact metrics.
Local Employment and Regional Operations
The airport acts as a vital engine for local employment, supporting approximately 300 jobs on-site during the peak season. Of those positions, 115 are directly tied to commercial traffic and passenger processing, spanning terminal operations, security, refueling, aircraft maintenance, ground handling, retail, cleaning, and air traffic control.
For the upcoming winter 2026–2027 schedule, the airport will maintain three active routes: two weekly rotations to Marseille and Marrakech operated by Ryanair, and two weekly flights to Lyon operated by easyJet on Mondays and Fridays, with extra Wednesday frequencies added during school holidays.
Expansion Plans for 2027
Looking ahead to the next summer season, airport leadership secured two new British routes set to launch in May 2027. Jet2 will introduce direct flights connecting La Rochelle to Birmingham and Manchester, expanding the airport’s UK network and international offerings. The Syndicat Mixte continues discussions with commercial carriers to establish additional domestic and international connections.
