Facing severe staff shortages—with global experts estimating the sector needs 1.5 million more rangers by 2030 to meet biodiversity targets—women on the front lines are combining traditional tracking skills with modern aerial tools to combat habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict.
### Team Owl Takes Conservation to the Skies in Kenya
In Kenya, female rangers Ruth Katumbi Mathitu and Muna Kalutu are breaking operational barriers as part of Team Owl. Based in the Wildlife Works Kasigau Corridor REDD+ Project—a critical elephant corridor linking Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks—the six-person all-female drone pilot team has shifted local monitoring tactics away from reliance solely on foot patrols and vehicles. According to team members, the unmanned aerial vehicles allow rangers to scan vast landscapes from a distance, spot illegal activities, support animal rescues, and respond to environmental emergencies much faster than before. Ranger Jane Mwaingati noted that the technology enables the team to alert emergency response units efficiently, while fellow ranger Florence Mwakio stated that mastering the equipment demonstrates that women can handle any role within the conservation workforce.
