The Seoul art and film scene is linking cinematic and museum experiences this autumn as the art-house theater Cinecube and the Sehwa Museum of Art launch a joint, cross-promotional initiative centered on German Neo-Expressionist master Georg Baselitz. According to Taekwang Group, Cinecube will host a special retrospective screening of the documentary Georg Baselitz starting Sept. 19 and running through Dec. 27, 2026, coinciding with the artist’s first posthumous exhibition at the adjacent Sehwa Museum of Art.
Documentary Spotlight on a Neo-Expressionist Pioneer
Directed to commemorate the artist’s 75th birth anniversary, the 2013 documentary captures the life, artistic philosophy, and hands-on creative processes of Georg Baselitz, who passed away in April 2026. According to event organizers, the film traces his evolution from a rural German boy into a towering figure of modern art. The feature showcases his studio practice and includes interviews with his wife and muse, Elke Baselitz, alongside their two sons, offering audiences a personal look at the man behind the canvas.
Baselitz reshaped post-war German visual culture by inverting his subjects upside down, a signature technique designed to challenge established painting norms. His body of work investigates the historical weight of war and division, human vulnerability, and the physical medium of painting itself.
Combined Exhibition and Screening Access in Seoul
To encourage multi-disciplinary engagement, Cinecube and the Sehwa Museum of Art have instituted cross-venue discounts for ticket holders throughout the autumn run. Visitors who present a Cinecube movie stub at the Sehwa Museum of Art receive a 5,000-won discount on the posthumous exhibition admission. Conversely, ticket holders for the Sehwa Museum exhibition receive a 2,000-won discount on any film screening at Cinecube.
A Cinecube representative stated that viewing the artist’s retrospective exhibition at the museum while exploring his biography and working methods on screen provides audiences with an immersive understanding of his oeuvre. The initiative reflects Taekwang Group’s broader strategy to connect its proprietary cultural and arts assets to deliver multi-layered experiences for patrons.
