US Urges Indonesia to Lead ASEAN in Strategic Trade Management

The United States is pressing Indonesia to serve as a role model for Southeast Asia by implementing strict security, openness, and cooperation standards on a global level. According to US Chargé d’Affaires for ASEAN Thao Anh Tran, the country’s economic size carries an obligation to lead neighboring countries, according to reporting by ANTARA News.

Speaking in Jakarta on Wednesday at the 5th Annual Southeast Asia Forum on Export Controls (SEAFEC), Thao noted that Indonesia holds the largest economy in Southeast Asia and functions as a key player in global trade. Because of that economic footprint, Thao stated that Indonesia bears an obligation to be an example for other Southeast Asian countries in (developing) STM, according to reporting by ANTARA News.

Strategic Trade Management and Dual-Use Risks

Strategic Trade Management serves as an international trade governance framework designed to monitor goods and technologies featuring potential dual-use capabilities. These items can serve both commercial and military purposes, creating vulnerabilities if left unchecked. Thao explained that increasingly complex global supply chains generate rising opportunities for malicious actors to misuse dual-use technologies. According to the US official, individual national approaches no longer suffice to counter these threats, making integrated regional cooperation a necessity.

The push for stricter oversight connects directly to bilateral trade commitments. The implementation of Strategic Trade Management aligns with Indonesia’s commitments under the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade with the US, which President Prabowo Subianto and President Donald Trump signed in February 2026, as reported by ANTARA News.

Philippines Chairmanship and Regional Frameworks

Adopting a unified regional approach carries direct economic benefits beyond defense. Thao emphasized that coordinated trade governance will boost security while building trust among international trading partners, ultimately establishing a predictable environment for economic growth and innovation across Southeast Asia.
