James Leonard Peters, a former New Zealand First Member of Parliament, prominent Northland educator, and the older brother of party leader Winston Peters, has died, according to announcements by New Zealand First and parliamentary officials on Tuesday.
Jim Peters served as a New Zealand First list MP from 2002 to 2005 and was a foundational figure within the political party, according to NZ First statements. Speaker Gerry Brownlee formally announced his passing to the House on Tuesday, prompting MPs to stand for a period of silence in his memory.
Political Career and Party Stature
Within New Zealand First, Jim Peters operated as a long-serving electorate chairperson and a foundational party figure. According to an official party tribute, members revered him for his “quiet wisdom, integrity, and principled guidance.” He entered Parliament in 2002 alongside his younger brother, Winston Peters. In a 2003 interview with the New Zealand Herald, Jim Peters noted that serving in the same caucus presented no difficulties, remarking that they came from a farming family where everyone worked and got along well.
Beyond his parliamentary tenure, Jim Peters served as chairperson of the Northland Regional Council, engaging directly with local governance. In the 2008 New Year Honours, he received a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to local body affairs, education, and the community. Reflecting on local politics at the time, he told the New Zealand Herald that he valued its directness and proximity to the community it served.
Educational Leadership in Northland and Auckland
Before his career in national politics, Jim Peters established himself as a widely respected educator across New Zealand. His career included positions as head of department at Mount Albert Grammar School in Auckland, principal of Northland College in Kaikohe from 1987 to 2002, and Pro Vice-Chancellor Māori at the University of Auckland.
During his tenure leading Northland College, the school’s roll grew so that approximately 80% of the student body was Māori, making it one of the largest mainstream schools catering to Māori students at the time. Northland College honored his passing on social media using a traditional proverb: “Kua hinga te kauri i te waonui a Tāne,” meaning a great tree has fallen in the great forest of Tāne, acknowledging his contribution to generations of Ngāpuhi youth.

Political figures and community organizations across New Zealand offered condolences following the announcement. Northland MP Grant McCallum posted on Facebook that Jim Peters’ contribution to the region was immense, describing him as a gentleman who regularly offered supportive advice.
