Mind-body practices like mindfulness and tai chi ease chronic pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbances in cancer survivors, according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. The research, which tracked over 500 participants across multiple institutions, highlights the therapeutic value of integrative care in managing long-term post-treatment symptoms.

The Mindfulness and Tai Chi for Cancer Health (MATCH) study evaluated more than 500 cancer survivors diagnosed with varying types and stages of the disease. Researchers from the University of Calgary, the University of Toronto, and Mass General Brigham in Boston collaborated on the trial to assess how structured mind-body interventions impact persistent post-treatment side effects.
“These findings reinforce the value of a whole-person approach to cancer survivorship care,” said senior author Peter Wayne, PhD, Director of the Osher Center for Integrative Health at Mass General Brigham. Wayne noted that both interventions helped participants handle burdensome challenges including fatigue, pain, and sleep difficulties in an integrated way.
Participants in the trial were permitted to choose their preferred practice or were assigned one if they had no preference. Outcomes were subsequently compared against a control group of patients placed on a waitlist. Results showed that patients engaging in mindfulness-based cancer recovery or tai chi and qigong experienced relief compared to the waitlist cohort.
How Mindfulness and Tai Chi Address Post-Treatment Symptoms
The two evaluated modalities utilize distinct techniques to support patient well-being. Mindfulness-based cancer recovery (MBCR) incorporates meditation, breathing exercises, gentle stretching, and group discussions focusing on acceptance and compassion to help individuals navigate illness stages.
Conversely, tai chi and qigong (TCQ) rely on ancient Chinese mind-body traditions that combine flowing physical movements with focused attention on breathing and body sensations. Lead investigator Linda E. Carlson, PhD, a professor at the University of Calgary, emphasized that cancer survivorship often extends well beyond active treatment. Carlson stated that the research team hopes to spark conversations among medical teams regarding the incorporation of these therapies into overall cancer care.
Regarding pain management, the study tracked two distinct metrics: pain intensity and pain interference with daily activities. While the interventions yielded minimal changes in raw pain intensity, pain interference improved over time. Investigators observed that mind-body practices alter the psychological and experiential aspects of suffering, helping patients manage existing discomfort more effectively.
Symptom Clustering and Integrated Care
Data analysis revealed a strong correlation among symptom clusters, specifically pain interference, sleep disturbances, and fatigue. Researchers found that improvements in one of these symptoms frequently drove parallel improvements in the other two, suggesting a shared underlying mechanism.
