Google Home is expanding its ecosystem to support third-party AI agents via Model Context Protocol (MCP) technology, allowing users to move beyond the platform’s built-in Gemini assistant. According to announcements covered by outlets like Hakky and TechWazir, the rollout began on Wednesday for US users subscribed to Google Home Premium Advanced.
Third-Party AI Integration via Model Context Protocol
Any AI agent supporting tool calling through Model Context Protocol technology can now interact directly with connected smart devices and event history within the Google Home ecosystem. Google specifically highlighted Anthropic’s Claude, open-source agents OpenClaw and Hermes, and the Google Antigravity coding platform as compatible options.
Advanced Capabilities and Subscription Requirements
The feature currently requires a $20 per month subscription and is limited to Google Home Premium Advanced users in the United States, according to early access rollout details. Users can utilize the voice mode of the Claude AI agent, for instance, to control thermostats, manage home automations, and generate text summaries of security camera footage.
