Kyle Larson snapped a 51-race winless streak by capturing the checkered flag in a chaotic, caution-heavy Enjoy Illinois 300 at World Wide Technology Raceway on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2026. The victory thrust the reigning Cup Series champion right back into the thick of the postseason Chase.
A Record-Breaking Afternoon of Caution Flags
The race featured 18 caution flags, setting a new track record for World Wide Technology Raceway and marking a season-high for the NASCAR Cup Series in 2026. In a double-overtime finish, Larson drove his No. 5 Chevrolet past Joey Logano and two of his Hendrick Motorsports teammates to secure his first victory since May 11, 2025, at Kansas Speedway.
“No better time to have a great day than today,” Larson told USA Network after the race, adding that he felt his team got their “swagger back a little bit.”
Larson and Team Penske’s Logano dominated the front of the field for most of the afternoon. Larson led 80 laps, while Logano paced the field for 96 laps in his No. 22 Ford. Brad Keselowski, who is outside the Chase field, led 55 laps before finishing 12th.
The race went into a red flag period with 11 laps remaining to clean debris following an incident on the backstretch involving Ty Gibbs, AJ Allmendinger, Ty Dillon, and Daniel Suarez. After the restart, Larson built a six-car-length lead before Chris Buescher hit the wall with two laps to go, forcing overtime.
Standings Shake-Up in the Chase
Entering the weekend seventh in the standings and 49 points behind leader Denny Hamlin, Larson capitalized on attrition that sidelined several other Chase contenders due to wrecks and brake rotor failures. With the victory and a Stage 2 win, Larson vaulted to second in the standings, now trailing Hamlin by just nine points with eight races remaining in the postseason.
Larson credited teammate Alex Bowman with pushing him to the front during the final restarts. “I knew if I could stay side-by-side with Joey, I would at least have a shot,” Larson told MRN. “Without Alex, I would not be in victory lane right now.”
Hendrick Motorsports Dominates the Top Four
Bowman finished second for his best result of the 2026 season, finishing a third of a second behind Larson. Logano took third, extending his streak of top-five finishes at Gateway to five races. William Byron placed fourth to give Hendrick Motorsports three of the top four finishing positions.
Ross Chastain, Austin Dillon, rookie Connor Zilisch, Carson Hocevar, Denny Hamlin, and Austin Cindric rounded out the top 10. For Zilisch, a Trackhouse Racing driver slated to move to Hendrick Motorsports in 2028 to replace a retiring Bowman, the seventh-place finish marked his best oval performance of the season.
Bowman admitted after the race that it was a difficult weekend following the death of his dog, Finn. “Super happy for Kyle, it’s just a really hard weekend, just to get on the plane and be here,” Bowman told USA Network. “I suck here, so clearly I had some help. That was really difficult… Really proud of Kyle for winning. I know it’s been a while.”
