A dead seabird discovered on Australia’s Lord Howe Island contained 894 pieces of plastic waste in its body, amounting to roughly 15% of its body weight, according to researchers studying wildlife. The finding highlights a worsening trend in ocean plastic ingestion among vulnerable bird populations.
The discovery involved a dead sable shearwater, documented by scientists tracking wildlife on the remote island. According to researchers, the 894 pieces of plastic weighed a total of 64.2 grams. For an 80-kilogram human, that volume of plastic would scale to the equivalent of swallowing approximately 12 kilograms of debris.
Escalating Plastic Ingestion Records Over 15 Years
Long-term monitoring by scientists on Lord Howe Island has tracked a consistent rise in the volume of plastic consumed by seabirds. Parents mistake plastic floating in the ocean for food and carry it back to their chicks.
In 2011, researchers recorded 276 pieces of plastic inside a single bird, a figure that stood as a high mark for more than a decade. That milestone was surpassed in 2023 when a shearwater fledgling was found to have ingested more than 400 pieces.
Types of Debris and Policy Implications
Analysis of the stomach contents revealed a rising proportion of industrial resin pellets, commonly known as nurdles, alongside standard bottle caps and unidentifiable fragments. Researchers note that these shifts point directly to the expanding volume of commercial and consumer waste entering global marine ecosystems.

Conservation scientists argue that mitigation measures—such as regulatory frameworks requiring bottle caps to remain tethered to beverage containers—remain critical as international bodies negotiate terms for a proposed Global Plastics Treaty. However, marine experts caution that even an immediate and stringent international agreement would not halt the accumulation of marine waste instantly. Scientific modeling indicates that plastic debris already circulating in the world’s oceans will likely continue to increase until 2050, even if the production of new plastic stopped entirely today.
